When you speed up a vinyl record on a turntable, the pitch rises. When you slow it down, the pitch drops. This is the fundamental relationship between pitch and tempo — they are directly linked on analog equipment.
- Speeding up a track (Pitching Up): Increasing the tempo raises the musical key. For example, pitching a track up by 6% increases the BPM and shifts the audio up by roughly one semitone.
- Slowing down a track (Pitching Down): Decreasing the tempo lowers the key, creating a heavier, chopped-and-screwed sound if pushed too far without digital time stretching.
Digital time-stretching algorithms (like those in Ableton Live, Serato, or Traktor) can change tempo without altering pitch, but vinyl DJs must work within the physical limits of the turntable fader.
